about

“The Last Carousel On Earth” does not ask you to fall in love with Grindcore, nor even romanticize its presence on Earth. I ask you rather to recognize that this could be a step in anyone's life. At this point in time, which was 2004, I had failed out of college, was living in Mt Pleasant, MI, and needed to get out. My sister was living in Sterling Heights, MI, and she decided it was fine for me to move in.

I was in my old “stomping grounds”, but things weren't great. Besides knowing I was never going back to college, I had destroyed several, close friendships, and was just dang broke. Everything I owned fit into my 1993 Buick Century, it was mainly heavy metal shirts, CDs, and the few pieces of music gear I still managed to retain. The most important piece was my Korg D16, the all-in-one, at-home digital recording device. I also managed to get a guitar teaching job back at Massimino Music, in Fraser, where I had previously taught.

Things were looking “okay”, but then one day in April 2004, my sister announced that she was quitting her job, and in the next three days she would be moving back in with our parents in who lived in Milwaukee, WI, 400 miles away!!! I felt the only thing I could do was also move back to Milwaukee, and go from there.

My grandmother graciously took me in without question. If you don't know Catherine Lewandowski, I hope that you at least get to see a few videos and interviews of her someday, but that's another story. I was back Milwaukee, living in my birthplace, in one of the hottest second floors I've ever known. It was the same second floor my mother, and two aunts were raised. The same second floor I would record most of this record on (The drums and vocals were recorded in my father's basement).

This would be my ode to an era, and a very difficult “goodbye”. It's for my family, and for the people who are there to help when life changes in an instant. It's funny, or perhaps more “interesting” to me, that this was the only thing I could think to do of at the time.
